A Time for Giving

‘Tis the season to give back. Here’s a list of ideas to spark your charitable spirit.

Local food banks like FoodNet and Second Harvest Food Bank are always looking for donations of canned goods and other non-perishable food items, especially during the holidays. When you buy groceries for your holiday meals, put a few extra items in your cart to help the hungry.

Give Warmth

As the temperatures sink, think about donating a coat or warm clothing to local charitable organizations. No one should suffer from the cold because they don’t own a winter jacket. Coats for Kids is a popular Acadiana coat drive that helps to keep children in our community warm.

Give Someone a Fresh Start

Shelters serving the homeless community are often in need of basic toiletries. Everyday items like shampoo, deodorant, razors, soap and toothpaste, can give people a fresh start.

Give to the Troops

Service men and women are often deployed at Thanksgiving and are unable to spend time with their families. Sending them a care package or a phone card is a great way to thank them for their service. Click here to send a phone card to troops through the USO’s Operation Phone Home.

Give to Charity

Still feeling stuffed from the big meal? Give back by signing up for a charity run this holiday season. Runs are usually available in a variety of lengths — 1 mile, 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon — so even if you haven’t been training, there’s a run for you.

Give a Seat at Your Table

Know someone who doesn’t have family nearby? Invite them to share a holiday meal with your family.
